Lenni Reviews: Disenchanted

"Disenchanted" is a play about a group of Disney princesses who want their story told the way it truly ended and show the audience that there isn't always a 'happily ever after.'

This play has a lot of the elements I expected from "real story" princess parodies but this not a criticism. The play is written, acted, and sung with such sass and clever humor there are no old jokes here. And the voices... I would see this play for that alone just to hear how powerfully these women sing.

The structure of the play is as if they all know they are playing a review of stories to tell the audiences what happened to them after their story ended. The showing I attended featured Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty as the main cast and Mulan, The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, and Tiana. Issues of race, sexuality, weight, and the effect The Princess Complex has on young girls are handled with aplomb, biting wit, and a warm heart. My only complaint is these ladies need a bigger stage and those voices deserve to be heard.
