Dragonball Z: Resurrection ‘F' Review

The return of Frieza - one of the most iconic villains of all time. Even the complete obliteration of his physical form can't stop the galaxy's most evil overlord. After years in spiritual purgatory, Frieza has been resurrected and plans to take his revenge on the Z-Fighters of Earth. Facing off against Frieza's powerful new form, and his army of 1,000 soldiers, Goku and Vegeta must reach new levels of strength in order to protect Earth from their vengeful nemesis.

Dragonball Z is severely coming back with a huge bang. Between the hit the show Dragonball Super, and the success of Battle of Gods, it was sure that Resurrection 'F' will follow in the same success. With over 50 million in the international box office it's clear Dragonball is not going anywhere.

How good is Dragonball Z Resurrection F? I would put it right up there with Broly's first movie. The story is simple with no real complicated or complex plot. One of Frieza loyal followers gets the Dragonballs from Earth and wishes him back. From there we have the setup of a typical revenge plot motive from Frieza. However the real meat of this film is the deeper look into the relationship of Goku and Vegeta, Beerus and Whis. One thing I enjoyed about this film, is that Goku and Vegeta relationship is explored. The film focuses on character flaws in each saiyan in battle. Goku tends to be to forgiving with his opponents and tends to be overconfident. This usually leaves him vulnerable for sneak attacks. As a person who feels Goku is too one dimensional at times. I found it refreshing that the film is giving him more relatable layers. We see Goku arrogant which is rare to see. Goku is showing traits of Vegeta when fighting Frieza. He toys around with him, taunts his power level and even tells him to come back when he is stronger. Personally I loved this character study, it shows fans that even Goku isn't perfect.

Vegeta biggest flaw is that he over thinks in battle. He gets way too emotional and needs to learn to relax. He easily underestimates is opponent and as you know is too proud to admit it. The film uses Frieza greatly to depict these flaws in each character. It's a great pay off when the final 15 mins start and Goku and Vegeta must overcome pride and overconfidence. Supporting characters such as Beerus and Whis get a little more backstory. We learn more about the ability of Whis which makes you wonder how strong is he. Piccolo, Tien, Krillin, Master Roshi and Gohan show up but they don't do much. I will say I wish Gohan will be handled more better. I understand that he is a family man now, but he truly lost his edge and it's disappointed to see. The show stealer of the entire movie is Jaco. Jaco is a character from the Dragonball manga prequel. He is a space cop that is in charge to keep the peace. He aids the Z fighters and battle and he id hilarious. Anytime Jaco is on screen you will want more of him. He is written so well, played off so well and use in a way that I want a spinoff show for him.

Overall Dragonball Z Resurrection F is a fun film. Great action, great return for an iconic villain, voice acting is top notch as always and good story.
