So You Want to Draw Comics? - Artist Spotlight: Buzz (DC, Image, Marvel) @NY Comic Con 2023

Buzz is a comic book artist and illustrator whom I've known of since the 90's. His works include DC, Image & Marvel titles as well as popular independents like Vengance of Vampirella, Shi and more.

INTERVIEW

Hi my name is Buzz, I'm a comic book illustrator of three decades - an old man! (laughs)

The arrival of the internet gave us an opportunity to promote our [own] work since working for other entities (e.g. DC, Marvel) will always make them more [money] from our work than we ever will. [So] I do not do sequential monthly books anymore because they don't pay s#!t.

Something I tell up-and-coming artists is: "Don't make your aspirations one day to draw X-Men." That can be fine, but once you've done that, what are you going to do? X-Men will outlive you and you don't own the X-Men [brand], right? So find your own artistic voice that outlasts the job that you're working on. That's the most important thing.

Right now, I'm creating a new website called JustBuzzArt.com. I'm building an imprint with that to help other fellow artists find some published work and produce some [of their own] with complete control of their content.

You can find me on Instagram, Facebook and every Sunday at 3pm EST, I do live sketching on WhatNot. It's not just to request and buy pieces of art, but if you're an aspiring artist, there's always someone there asking for tips, how-to's (and how not-to's), along with lots of bad dad jokes. My embarrassed friends will come on and wonder "what are you saying now?" and poke fun.

Do you sell art on your site?

Yes. I will on the new site, but if you go to my whatnot, there's a "Shop" category and you can always purchase stuff on there.
