The Testament of Sister New Devil (Episode 1) Review

Basara Toujo is a high school student whose father has suddenly just remarried. His father then departs overseas leaving Basara with two new beautiful step-sisters. Little does he know, his new sisters, Mio and Maria are actually the new Demon Lord and a succubus!? Almost trapped into a life of servitude, Basara forms a reverse contract by accident and ends up becoming Mio’s master! Hijinks ensue as Basara finds himself in one ecchi situation after another. However, Mio’s life is in danger as she is pursued by demons and heroes!

At first The Testament of Sister New Devil starts off like any cliche anime. You find out that the main character Basar Toujo mother is not around. His father is planning to go on a business trip, and he is left to take care of the house. Then add the element of two strange girls, that his father has taken in to live with him as his sisters and you have a cliche beginning. The story beginning didn't really do much for me especially how the characters were introduce. For me starting off the first meeting between Basara and Mio with fan service wasn't a sell for me. It made feel like the show was not trying to stand out above the normal anime. The first act didn't do it for me with setting the tone of show. It started off like a comedy but in the second act it picked up.

In the second act it felt like the show found it's footing. The characters and plot started to come into play. We find out Mio and Maria's true intentions and the show goes from comedy to a more dark tone. Action scenes with a help of a decent score will grab you in and keep you glued. Away is the perverted fan-service and in comes a more focal point on the characters. This is where the episode shines. The back-story on Mio and Maria being a Demon Lord and a succubus is well told. Also the explanation on why Basara's father leave and who Basara is made me interested. Unfortunately all of this great stuff happens towards the end of the show.

Pros

Good Second Act
Great Action
Characters Backstory

Cons

Boring, Cliche First Act
Unnecessary Fanservice

Final Grade 6.0/10
