Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend Episode 3 Review

Tomoya continues to procrastinate despite a fast approaching deadline for his project proposal. Eriri and Utaha wonder if he's really serious about creating a dating sim game.

In episode 3 I get my wish for more screen time for Eriri and Utaha. In this episode Kato takes a backseat as she is on vacation with her family. In the meantime school is currently on break and Tomoya is in a drive spell creatively. He's has a deadline to at least get the core concept and idea of the game before school starts off. Days have pass and he has no ideas coming to him. Enters Eriri who shows up to his place randomly to draw her 18+ manga. However secretly she is there to motivate Tomoya. The continuation of Tomoya not knowing Eriri true feelings plays heavy on this episode. Eriri clearly has an emotional attachment to Tomoya but can't expressed it. Instead of coming out with her feelings honestly she screams at Tomoya, gets embarrassed or acts like she doesn't care. This really escalates when Utaha decides to drop by for a visit as well. Utaha is more forward with Tomoya, she tells him what she wants and that is to get it together. She gives him some great advice on making sure the team he builds give their all.

Out of the two girls I find Utaha to be the more mature one. She is blooming with confidence and is very precise with everything she does. Eriri on the other hand still acts childish in situations with Tomoya. Both girls have feelings for him but Utaha will probably have the upper hand in this battle. This episode showed more progress on Utaha and Eriri story arch and relationship. The chemistry between the two characters will keep you watching the show. However they actually might have a third contender with Kato who is the apple of Tomoya dating sim.

Overall episode 3 offer another solid entry to this anime. The writing remains consistent with it's references to Otaku culture and fourth wall breaking. The characters are being developed nicely with a fair balance for each one getting a chance to progress.
