Project Almanac Review

As a group of friends discover plans for a time machine, they build it and use it to fix their problems and personal gain. But as the future falls apart with disasters, and each of them disappear little by little, they must travel back to the past to make sure they never invent the machine or face the destruction of humanity.

Project Almanac is an entertaining film for the most part. The first two acts of the film are very intriguing, while the third act drops the ball. The film follows David Raskins a tech wiz who uncovers blueprints of a time machine in his father's attic. With the aid of his friends Quinn Goldberg, Adam Le and his sister Kathy Raski they manage to build the machine. Half of the film is the process of getting the machine to work through trial and error. Getting the supplies and proper equipment for the machine was fun to watch. The characters themselves are likable, the teenage demographic will be able to connect to with the group. Each character has something the teen audience can relate too in terms of highschool life. There is bullying, trying to win the heart of your crush and of course homework. The film does well with gearing towards it's target audience. Don't expect these teens to go back in time and stop dictators, assassinations etc.

The film keeps it realistic on what a teen would do if they can go back in time. The teens go back in time to get revenge on bullies, make sure they win the lottery, meet celebs and win the heart of their affection. The time travel rules are still in place in this film. For example you still can't meet yourself or you will disappear. However when it comes to consequences of traveling back in the time the film drops the ball. One action David does causes planes to fall, people to die or ending careers. Out of all the things they did in the past it was tough for me to accept a kiss with his crush causing everything to go to hell. These events all happen in the third act and it's not paced well that it will make you lose interest. Overall the film is entertaining with some good acting from the cast. However the ending and subplot with David's father doesn't pay off well. The consequences of the teens actions are random and some of science in the film are up for debate. Still if you want to see an entertaining and time to kill go check this one out.
