Lenni Reviews: "Sheets" by Brenna Thummler

*This book was sent to me in exchange for an honest review.

After her mother's death, Marjorie is holding down the family laundromat all by herself and raising her little brother as her father is still mired in his grief. She has typical outsider problems at school but she also has to deal with the conniving Nigel; who is after the laundromat to demolish the building and replace it with a resort. Feeling disconnected and helpless, things change for Marjorie when a ghost named Wendell sneaks into her shop.

This is a beautiful story about a young woman dealing with loss the best way she can. The laundromat is a perfect setting after such a deep shock since, after the death of a loved one, you do feel like you're spinning and being tossed about beyond your control; feeling transparent and lost, just floating through life.

Not too much time is spent on the "mean girls" schtick, as that can get old real fast. The idea of ghosts being actual sheets could be stupid if not for the amazing art. The whole book is in such a soothing palate, it's a pleasure to the eyes. Wendell and his friends are delightful as well but if I had to nitpick (and of course I do) this is another of those awesome graphic novels that feels like it ended too soon. I wanted to know more about everyone; even that dipshit Nigel: He of the Punchable Face.

Also, and this is spoiler territory here, something about the ending didn't quite sit right with me. SPOILERSSS!!!

Marjorie starts using Ghosturizer - basically ghost detergent/stain remover - to save her failing business, which seems a bit exploitive to me. I get that do misadventures it was Wendell's fault in part that Marjorie got into some extra trouble but unfettered access to otherworldly cleaning products? Seems highly suspect.

Other than that, awesome book. It's meant for kids but I recommend to anyone who needs a daily dose of DAWWWW!! 4 out of 5.

First Look HARBINGER WARS 2 #4 – The Final Battle Commences in August!

Posted By Sean Tucker

Valiant is proud to present your first look at the covers for HARBINGER WARS 2 #4 (of 4) – an unstoppable pulse-pounding climax in the SEISMIC SIX-PART CROSSOVER EVENT that will wreak havoc across the landscape of the Valiant Universe! On August 29th, it all ends here as Eisner Award-nominated writer Matt Kindt (X-O MANOWAR, ETERNITY) and superstar artist Tómas Giorello (X-O MANOWAR) bring the cataclysmic showdown to an unforgettable, heart-stopping conclusion… and when the dust settles, nothing will be the same!

We called it the biggest, most impactful, most ambitious Valiant event ever attempted – and we meant it! From across the Valiant Universe, the paths of all of the world's most formidable heroes – X-O Manowar, the Harbinger Renegades, Bloodshot, Ninjak, the Secret Weapons, H.A.R.D. Corps, and dozens of newly activated psiots – have finally converged, drawn together by their old ally Livewire's last-ditch effort to protect the powerless.

Now, the long-brewing battle between Valiant's greatest icons will finally reach the stratosphere – literally – and, out of the ashes, a new order for the Valiant Universe will be hewn as New York Times best-selling writer Matt Kindt and comics juggernaut Tomás Giorello present the MUST-READ comics showdown of 2018! On August 29th, no one gets out unscathed in HARBINGER WARS 2 #4 – featuring covers by J.G. Jones (Final Crisis), Mico Suayan (BLOODSHOT SALVATION), Juan José Ryp (BRITANNIA), Felipe Massafera (Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern)!

But first! Jump on board the astonishing first issue of HARBINGER WARS 2 when it descends on comic book stores everywhere this month on May 30th! This summer, the most anticipated event in Valiant’s publication history begins in full force as Matt Kindt and Tomás Giorello crack the Valiant Universe in two in HARBINGER WARS 2 #1 (of 4)!

For the rare and immensely powerful subset of humanity known as psiots, their unique abilities have come with an enormous cost. Once, their existence was known only to a select few. Now, the revelation that thousands of these latent telekinetic “harbingers” secretly live among us – with the potential to be activated at any moment – has led the American government to a dramatic tipping point…

Armed with new extra-governmental authority, the deep-black military contractor known as Omen has been authorized to identify, evaluate, and, if need be, eliminate all super-normal threats to the homeland. H.A.R.D. Corps units have been deployed into cities and towns across the United States to enforce their orders.

In the East, one of the most powerful minds on Earth, Peter Stanchek, is leading his band of Renegades across the country, activating any potential psiots willing to join them, and building an insurrection force of ultra-powerful and unwieldy new abilities that will soon bring war to Omen’s doorstep…and the unstoppable force known as X-O Manowar raging back to Earth.

In the West, Livewire – the telekinetic technopath with the ability to bend machines and computers to her will – will be forced to choose between her former allies…or her newfound team of Secret Weapons. As the situation escalates beyond human control, the United States will be plunged into darkness from coast to coast, launching Bloodshot and Ninjak into a dangerous mission to neutralize their one-time teammate – and setting the stage for the most shocking, most violent, and most consequential clash of powers ever witnessed in the history of the Valiant Universe!

On May 30th, master storytellers Matt Kindt and Tomás Giorello offer up an unprecedented collision of Valiant heroes as  X-O Manowar, Livewire, the Harbinger Renegades, Bloodshot, the Secret Weapons, Ninjak, and a cast of thousands draw their battle lines in HARBINGER WARS 2 #1 (of 4) – featuring covers by J.G. Jones(Wanted), Mico Suayan (MOON KNIGHT), Juan José Ryp (NINJA-K), Felipe Massafera (Flashpoint: Abin Sur), and Lewis LaRosa (BLOODSHOT SALVATION)!

Lenni Reviews: "The Ghost, The Owl" by Franco and Sara Richard

*This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

One night, an owl spies the ghost of a young girl skipping across the swamp and goes to investigate. Despite the advice of his fellow owls, he decides to help the lost ghost figure out why she is lost and the mystery of how she died.

Despite being predictable, this is a beautifully drawn, sweet story. The art is a treat for the eyes; soft and flowing when it needs to be and crisp and scary when it needs to be. The detail is fantastic so, even though this is a pretty standard 'find out why the ghost died so they can move on' story, it's so pretty, it should be seen.

The ending is a bit abrupt and I would say this is too dark for very young kids but I enjoyed it and give it a 3.9 out of 5!

Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay Review

credit: Warner Bro. Animation

Hey O&G fans, today we have a review of DC/Warner Bro. new animated movie Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay. As always before a review here is a quick synapsis of the movie.

Amanda Waller’s secret team Task Force X (consisting of Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, Killer Frost, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn and Copperhead) is sent to retrieve a powerful mystical object that they will risk their lives to steal. Unfortunately for the Suicide Squad, there are other villains who want the prize, and they must win a race to get it, in order to stay alive.

A Little about the Movie

Credit: Warner Bros.

Following Ocean Master's defeat, Amanda Waller dispatches  Task Force X, consisting of Deadshot, Count Vertigo, Black Manta, and criminal couple Punch and Jewelee, to recover a flash drive from Tobias Whale. Despite the team successfully completing the mission, Vertigo and Jewelee betrays the others by attacking Deadshot and killing Punch. They reveal to Deadshot that they have been working together since their time in jail. Unknown to them, Waller was listening to the conversation the whole time because she suspected there was a traitor and activates nano-tech bombs implanted in Vertigo and Jewelee's necks. Vertigo is killed by the bomb while Deadshot shoots Jewelee out of mercy, much to Waller's intrigue.

REVIEW

Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay is a Dark and Bloody animated movie with some laughs, but not quite as good as Escape from Arkam. Like Escape From Arkam, Amanda Waller (The Thinner Version) sends Task Force X  on a secret mission to obtain a supernatural McGuffin. ( No Spoilers you will see what it is when you watch the movie). This is a non sanctioned mission for the Squad, they are stripped of their usual resources and gear and are reduced to driving across country in an RV (imagine an all Super Villains road trip lol).

The movie set up feels like a 70's grind house film with blood, gore and sex, which isn't a bad thing, but it doesn't seem to fully work for this animated feature.   The fight scenes look great, but the more conversational scenes in between don’t fare so well. Especially the arguments between Deadshot and Bronze Tiger, it gets old quick. The characters have these stiff stoic expressions whenever they talk. Because of this, jokes and one-liners end up falling flat.

As always a solid voice cast with these DC Universe Original Movies, and this is no exception, with standout performances by Vanessa Williams (Amanda Waller), C. Thomas Howell (Professor Zoom), Greg Grunberg (ahem..."Steel Maxum"), and James Urbaniak (Professor Pyg). My personal favorite is Tara Strong who gives another great performance as Harley Quinn.

Overall I did enjoy the movie, the action and story were good. I would rate the one lower compared to the other films in this series. Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay will release digitally on March 27, 2018 and is released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 10, 2018.

Lenni Reviews: "Bettie Page" Vol. 1 by David Avallone

*This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review and is recommended for older readers.

In this collection of "secret diaries," we follow our femme fetale, Bettie Page, as she dodges the cops, secret agents, and cult members all while trying to make a living as a model and movie star of B movies with aliens... All while helping beat the bad guys.

This book is a whole lot of cheese and I kinda love it for that. I am an absolute sucker for pin-up art and all the guest art and the comic itself is lovely to look at; even with the batshit crazy ideas. However, there's this sensation of being in a glitter bomb; shiny, pretty, but confusing in all it's bright colors and movement. At the end, I had to re-read it all because I didn't remember what exactly happened. Gotta give it a 3 out of 5 for that but it sure is pretty.
