Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang, Paper Girls is a high-stakes personal journey depicted through the eyes of four girls, played by breakout leads Camryn Jones as Tiffany Quilkin, Riley Lai Nelet as Erin Tieng, Sofia Rosinsky as Mac Coyle, and Fina Strazza as KJ Brandman. Ali Wong also stars as the grown-up version of Erin, with Nate Corddry as Larry, and Adina Porter as Prioress.
The latest Marvel Disney+ series not only stuck the landing but successfully introduced the teenage superhero into the MCU and to new audiences. Ms. Marvel is one of the strongest and highest rated disney plus shows, garnering rave reviews, with Iman Vellani deservingly claiming her position as the newest addition into the world of Marvel heroes.

The high-octane $200-million Netflix/AGBO produced film based on Mark Greaney’s novel drops on Netflix this Friday and is available in select theaters. The film stars Golden Globe nominee Ryan Gosling as CIA operative Court Gentry aka Sierra Six who goes toe to toe with former Captain America, (Chris Evans) who plays Lloyd Hansen, a former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. This non-stop adrenaline rush is sure to wow audiences with its explosions, effects, and impressive stunt work although it isn't anything extraordinary or original.
When the CIA’s most skilled operative—whose true identity is known to none—
accidentally uncovers dark agency secrets, a psychopathic former colleague puts a bounty on his head,
setting off a global manhunt by international assassins.
The action-packed thriller is Gosling’s first venture with the Russo Brothers, and his return to mega- action blockbuster’s since his lead role in Blade Runner 2047. He plays the skilled operative Court Gentry aka Six, who we first get introduced to in a federal penitentiary. He is recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) who he builds a father-son type relationship with over the years. Under Fitzroy, Six earns his ranking as one of the best agents in the covert program known as Sierra, making a name for himself while remaining hidden in the shadows. Gentry was once a highly-skilled, Agency-sanctioned merchant of death, but now the tables have turned as he becomes the target, hunted internationally by psychopath Lloyd Hansen.
“The Gray Man” Sierra program is an unofficial government sanctioned operation that recruits nameless assassins and offers them limited sentences in exchange for a lifelong commitment. These assets are chosen for certain skill-sets, a lack of family and lack of morality. After years of loyalty to the program Sierra Six is now targeted by the agency currently run by the entitled and whiny Denny Carmichael (Regé-Jean Page). Six is now on the run as he has something they want, which is the only thing keeping him alive. In a web of co-conspiracies and competitors, Six doesn't kill for pleasure or a price, unlike the other deadly assassins currently hunting him. He also has to save a kid in the process, who Carmichael has kidnapped as collateral.
“It’s really the first time in his life that he’s had any kind of power. He was powerless as a child to a very domineering father, he was powerless to the prison system and then powerless to the CIA. So, even though everything is very cinematic and the stakes are heightened, his story is very relatable in a way because all he really wants is to have some kind of control over himself and over his own life.” - Gosling
Gosling is badass, sarcastic and makes being an assassin look like a walk in the park. He has a natural presence on screen that keeps viewers captivated and cheering him on. The movie delves into his past ever so slightly, with just enough insight into why his life has gone down this path of mayhem. Aside from that we don't know much about his character which adds to the mystery of Sierra Six.

Evans reunites with the Russo Bros. but this time as the villain, Former CIA recruit Lloyd Hansen, who lasted only five-and-a-half months with the agency before being dismissed for unauthorized torture and lack of impulse control. A free-agent assassin, he torments his targets for sport. Hired by Carmichael, a former schoolmate, to hunt the Gray Man, he’s never learned to play nicely with others and enjoys tormenting people. His character is unbelievable, outrageous and oh that ridiculous stache, but it works! Evans is hilarious as the compulsive, hothead, and psychopathic loose cannon that cannot be contained. He is extremely impulsive, has no ethics whatsoever, and condones all kinds of unsanctioned torture. He goes on a wild and menacing goose chase to hunt down his prey (Six) with an insane amount of collateral. Gosling and Evans are so thoroughly entertaining and work magic together as the hostile adversaries.
Ana de Armas reunites with both her co-stars from Blade Runner 2049 (Gosling), and Knives Out (Evans) in the all-star studded film. She plays Dani Miranda, a smart and kickass agent who helps Six with his mission, however the movie does little to show any sort of range of her acting chops. She is very one-dimensional and doesn't get much time to shine aside from being a typical pretty sidekick. They could have given her character more depth and played with the possibility of her being a rogue agent or a key operative more.
Regé-Jean Page plays the toxic misogynistic power hungry and entitled Agency Group Chief Denny Carmichael, but unfortunately Page also comes off as just another attractive face thrown in the mix. Denny is incredibly whiny, throws temper tantrums and complains a lot. His character is very stereotypical as the new head honcho in charge, who has a power-trip and is clearly hiding something. What the film fails to show is exactly what that is, it is kind of brushed over very quickly- the typical overt ops, conspiracies and cover-ups in a minute of uncovered footage. The film could have made him a little more menacing.
The Russo brothers certainly raised the bar for blockbuster filmmaking in artistry, scope, and box office returns with their string of MCU properties. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), which in addition to concluding the “Avengers saga” racked up numerous industry records, including Biggest Single-Day Gross, Highest-Grossing Opening Weekend, and Highest-Grossing Film of All Time.” (netflix)
Without a doubt this is visually a Russo brothers movie, with its incredible cinematography, wide- angle shots, globe-trotting and impressive stunt work. There was loads of action, great hand-to-hand combat/gunplay and some memorable action scenes. Overall, the movie is a lot of fun but it is unoriginal and brings nothing new to the spy-action genre. It lacked any actual detective work, espionage, or smarts. It displays concepts we've seen over and over again- the unrealistic jump out of a burning plane scene, the jump off a moving train onto your buddies car scene, and even somewhat similar premises to movies like the Bourne series and Looper.
From a storytelling standpoint it generally keeps it safe and some jokes just don't land. It is not quite original and lacks its own identity. The colors scheme is vibrant neon reminiscent of the visuals of the John Wick franchise, although this was aesthetically pleasing as they traveled around the world showcasing different countries and backdrops. The third act and very last scene were unanticipated but not in a good way. It seems as if they tried to make it a common theme “just another Thursday '' but it just didn’t stick as the last escape was unrealistic, frivolous and unnecessary. The film featured mediocre storytelling, and a lot of things just don’t entirely make sense.
The Gray Man is a fun high-octane, non-stop adrenaline rush full of vibrant colors, explosions and some of the most attractive faces in Hollywood. It’s a considerably solid movie that plays it safe, the story and the dialogue can be a little silly, but ultimately we’re watching for the ass-kicking.
“Whatever it takes” .. The Boys team up once again as they embark on a mission to take down Vought and the uncontrollable self-absorbed super-maniac Homelander (Antony Starr). If you're worried about the season not living up to its predecessors, do not panic. The show's shock value has in no way diminished with its “Ant-man”

Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead is ultimately a gory blast and a fun exciting new take on the action- horror genre. What do you get when you cross Alpha Zombies, Vegas and a multi- million dollar heist ?!
Thanks to Netflix I got to watch an advanced screening of Zack Snyder’s eagerly-anticipated Netflix Film, Army of The Dead. This was my first time back in theaters in a year and a half since covid, and I’m so happy I attended. It was definitely worth the trip. From the vision of filmmaker Zack Snyder (300, Zack Snyder’s Justice League) comes ARMY OF THE DEAD: a venturous and captivating new spin on the zombie genre with a splash of Oceans Eleven. Gore, comedy, guts, mayhem …& a Zombie Tiger ?!
After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble by venturing into the quarantine zone for the greatest heist ever.
Starring Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, and Omari Hardwick, Army of the Dead is not your typical zombie flick. Zack Snyder, who already has some experience with the undead (Dawn of the Dead) took a big risk bringing to life a horror/heist film. Think the Gentleman meets World War Z ! What a brilliant combo ! The thrilling dark twisted comedy also touches upon pandemics, coping with loss, capitalism, and the fight for human rights. The exciting eye- catching opening credits start off with a brilliant, vibrant and neon Vegas being overridden by an enormous zombie horde, a Zombie Elvis, and zombie exotic dancers as Vegas literally falls apart.
The film takes place a few years after a zombie outbreak that has left Las Vegas in ruins and completely walled off from the rest of the world. We meet Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), a displaced Vegas local, and former zombie war hero who’s now flipping burgers on the outskirts of town and is approached by casino boss Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada) with an unexpected offer:
Break into the zombie-infested quarantine zone to retrieve $200 million sitting in a vault beneath the strip before the city is nuked by the government in 32 hours. With a ticking clock, a notoriously impenetrable vault, and a smarter, faster horde of Alpha zombies closing in, only one thing’s for certain in the greatest heist ever attempted: survivors take all.
Why not?! What’s left to lose? Ward accepts the challenge, and assembles a misfit team of experts for the heist. We see some quality acting from Batista, and really get to see more range from him in his portrayal as Ward and his emotional interactions with his estranged daughter (Ella Purnell).
The film features a fantastic cast of characters all with unique personalities and stand out performances. Snyder nailed the typical trope elements from heist films giving each character a typical skill-set: the standard mechanic, getaway driver (in this case pilot), professional yeggman aka safecracker, a guide, highly trained gun-men, the guy no one trusts, and wait an Influencer ??!!
The ragtag team of experts included:
-Maria Cruz (Ana de la Reguera), an ace mechanic and Ward’s old friend
-Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick), a zombie killing machine
-Marianne Peters (Tig Notaro), a cynical helicopter pilot
-Mikey Guzman (Raúl Castillo), a go-for-broke influencer
-Chambers (Samantha Win), Mikey’s ride-or-die
-Martin (Garret Dillahunt), the casino’s head of security
-A badass warrior known as the Coyote (Nora Arnezeder)
-Burt Cummings (Theo Rossi), a slimy security guard
-A brilliant German safe cracker named Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer)
The eccentric team up was badass, ruthless, and definitely memorable. Throughout the film the cast was highly entertaining, had great on screen chemistry and worked really well off of each other. There were some genuine laughs from the audience thanks to some hilarious stand out moments from Matthias Schweighöfer, Omari Hardwick, and Tig Notaro. The humorous banter between tough guy Vanderohe (Omari) and genius Dieter (Matthias) really added a natural comedic tone to the film, and it was not forced at all. It really added depth to their characters and to the whole “heist squad” cliche. These two shared some of the best scenes.

(Tig Notaro) played another stand-out character, Marianne Peters, the sarcastic and dry humored helicopter pilot, who actually didn’t even have that much screen time. Marianne was definitely a fun addition to the team after Notaro replaced comedian Chris D’Elia’s character after he was fired for reports of sexual misconduct. Instead of having to reshoot all those scenes, Snyder had to recreate every scene shot for shot with Notaro. Despite having this major setback, the CGI was extremely impressive, not even noticing her character was basically plugged in. (Why was a mustache so hard to fix cough cough?)
Some other note-worthy details of the film were all the memorable kills and deaths. There were so many bloody awesome scenes with well-deserved claps from the audience. The movie also features different types of zombies: without getting into any spoilers Army of the Dead has smart alpha zombies that somehow communicate amongst each other, warrior zombies, and hibernating zombies. Props to Snyder trying to give us more than your typical sluggish brainless zombies. He really got to express some creative freedom with this film.
I am very big on all types of heist films (Heat, The Italian Job, Money Heist, Reservoir Dogs, Snatch, Baby Driver, Ocean’s Eleven etc.); This film does a pretty good job of balancing heist elements while maintaining its zombie action persona. It has plenty of stunts, explosions, blueprints and planning, team work, and heavy artillery. It was cool to see different villains and antagonists, also the Zombie tiger has a good amount of screen time and definitely lives up to expectations.
The only real question viewers have is how could that many zombies possibly be contained and kept to just Vegas. We also don’t know much about the spread aside from getting bitten, or about the cause of the virus outbreak, but the movie also sets up sequels!
Army of the Dead is super enjoyable, not to be taken seriously and an exciting new take on the overdone Zombie craze. Aside from being a comedic horror/ action it actually showed some real human emotion and had some unexpected twists. The score was fantastic and the soundtrack pairs perfectly with every single scene. Definitely a fun time for any zombie fans.

Snyder’s Justice League is visually stunning, action packed and delivers fans Justice!
After waiting nearly four years the SNYDERCUT has finally dropped on HBO MAX and was well worth the wait as fans are calling it one of the best DCEU films yet. Director Zack Snyder’s glorious vision was finally brought to life in this reimagining of the 2017 botched film. The Snydercut gives us new footage, completely different storylines, new characters and an entirely different third act.
At this point most people are aware of the tragic death of Snyder’s daughter, the behind the scenes drama of the theatrical release, Snyders’ departure due to creative differences and Joss Whedon’s (Avengers) disappointing take- over. Although not perfect, Snyder fixed a lot of the flaws of the theatrical release and gave us a much stronger, enjoyable and cohesive film. The Syndercut is essentially an extended version of Justice League with new footage that tied up all the loose ends, cut out all the cheesy and sexiest JOSStice scenes, improved the horrific CGI, and primarily made all of our beloved heroes much more captivating and GODLIKE!
I loved the extra storylines and the stronger interactions between the cast. There was a good balance between the dark grittiness we’re used to as well as some humor. It felt like pages directly from a comic book and DC Animated were literally brought to life. The opening sequence gave us so much stronger introductions; with a glimpse of Lex with the mother boxes, Mera in Atlantis, the Amazons, and Bruce attempting to recruit Aquaman which leads to chapter one.
The film was divided into six chapters and an epilogue, and it was roughly four hours long. Yes, this is way too long for a theatrical release, but watching from the comfort of your own home and in sections this was actually a genius move. Snyder was giving us a glimpse into what could’ve been and successfully gave fans an entire DC Universe with the third installment of his DCU films. SnyderCut not only gave us more Themyscira, but Darkseid, Zeus, Ares and even a Green Lantern in a more prominent flashback scene with the allied Amazons, Men, and Atlantenans. The theatrical release was a mere 2 hours cutting out well everything important for the film to have successfully progressed. WB should know by now that fans will sit and watch three hours of a good movie (LOTR, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Watchmen) so why cut short one of the biggest team ups in DC history?
JL takes place months after the events of BvS, and Batman seeks out other heroes to form a team of allies to take on Steppenwolf; an alien invader who plans on conquering the world. With Wonder Woman’s help Bruce Wayne enlists Cyborg, Aquaman, and the Flash to help take on this menacing threat, but this time there’s more!
Snyders decision to include more scenes with the Amazons, Atlanteans, Cyborg’s parents, Barry and Iris West, Darkseid, Ryan Choi (Atom) and Star Labs made a drastic difference. The character development was far superior in this cut as each scene was completely necessary for the overall flow of the movie. Snyder not only makes each villain a more imminent threat, but every hero more likeable and powerful in their own respect.
Although Steppenwolf is still the main villain, he now reports to an even bigger boss, major DC Villain Darkseid. The decision to include Darkseid, and to flesh out Steppenwolf was a drastic improvement for the movie. In the Josstice version a major issue was that Steppenwolf was such a weak villain that he didn’t even warrant the assembling of the JL. Now everything makes a lot more sense. Not only did Steppenwolf’s look and armor drastically improve, but we now learn that his intentions are to get back into the good graces of Darkseid, ruler of the planet Apokolips. Steppenwolf has a lot more camera time, has a much clearer objective and even has a very brutal beheading scene. Steppenwolf also uses a mind-controlling weapon that taps into the subconscious digging up information, these parasites that attach themselves to victims faces are a major nod to DC supervillain Starro the Conqueror.
Darkseid makes his DCU debut in this version and he’s much more intimidating than Steppenwolf and would be DCs equal to Marvel’s Thanos, it’s about time. Snyder gives us just enough Darkseid to tease us with an appearance to set up what would have been two sequels. This makes perfect sense as Darkseid would send in parademons and minions before his arrival on earth after being informed the Anti- Life Equation has been found. The movie does a good job of explaining why he is after the Motherboxes now, after all this time, because Superman is not a threat.
Snyder successfully shows us that not all our heroes are human but that they are Gods and extremely powerful beings. With the same injustice tone of Man of Steel, Snyder once again gives us Godlike heroes as he delves more into the mythology, giving viewers a much better understanding of each character and their history. He lets each character play to their strengths, everyone is fleshed out and he shows actual teamwork.
In Snyder’s JL he really lets Cyborg (Ray Fisher) shine, essentially being the heart of the movie. Cyborg is central to the plot as he is in possession of the third and final mother box. Cyborg ends up playing a much more integral role, especially learning that his technology derives from the same powers of the Mother Boxes; it makes sense for him to have more screen time.
Snyders version does a better job of balancing Victor’s self- loathing and internal struggle as he starts to understand his technology and machine- like powers. Including the scene where Cyborg hacks the ATM and gives the mother money showed Victor’s human side and added depth to his very “emo” portrayal. Snyder also shows the audience a lot more of Cyborg’s tragic story by including his mother. Cyborg’s father, Doctor Silas Stone also had a much more notable role, especially the key scene when locking himself to track the heat signature. These extra scenes and more Star labs really made a difference. Ryan Choi (Atom) is really more important than you think. Snyder also included more Star labs security, the national guard, and the JL actually had to have a plan to infiltrate.
Gal Gadot continued to amaze us with her onscreen portrayal of Diana Prince/ Wonder Woman. She was just as badass, graceful, and powerful as her solo flick and BvS appearance. Snyder gives us a much stronger and likeable WW. She is a leader, a god, a warrior, and not there as just eye candy or a sex object as Whedon depicted. There are no up the skirt camera angles, no crude Aquaman remarks or objectifying moments. The Josstice movie objectified Diana, Lois, and the Amazons with his portrayal of women, Snyder gives them so much more depth. You can see the difference in respect for the characters and take them more seriously. Also notable Wonder Woman is more of a badass in her opening sequence than the entirety of WW84.
Snydercut also gives us a much more likeable and crucial Barry Allen. The Flash (Ezra Miller) still gives us a playful and wisecracking Barry Allen lightening the tone, but he is the hero in this film as he has to break his own rule and manipulate time in order to reverse the destruction. Snyder gives Barry a chance to actually shine being the fastest man alive. He is not as weak and cowardly, and we actually see Flash reversing time. Snyder also gives us really great stand- out moments like Barry saving Iris, when his shoes break and the slow motion emotional moments.
Even Aquaman was more fleshed out, (Jason Momoa) as he was involved more than just being there to disagree with everyone or flirt with WW. Synder took out the stupid Lasso of truth scene and gave Aquaman better material to work with. We now see Vulko, Aquaman’s mentor, in some important scenes establishing Arthur’s relationship with his fellow Atlanteans. We have a more clear understanding of Arthur’s first introduction to Mera, and mention of King Orm setting up “Aquaman.” A small but very noteworthy adjustment is the way Atlanteans speak underwater. (Not Amber Heard’s horrible English accent which came out of nowhere, even though Dafoe had no accent) but the speech bubbles. To speak with her Atlantean subordinates, Mera creates an air bubble to facilitate human speech. Although this was dropped in Wan’s Aquaman film, this was really cool to see Snyder capture this little detail of how they community in human speech. Outside the bubble Atlanteans typically speak like dolphins using clicks, whistles and noises.
Although this time Batman took more of a back seat giving other members more screen time, Bruce becomes more of a leader. We get a better, more serious non-cheesy Bruce Wayne/ Batman. Batfleck (Ben Affeck) returns this time with no unnecessary quips that Batman would never say. We have a more witty Alfred, cool bat tech that is actually explained and showcased and a better team up overall. His focus is to bring back Superman and do whatever is necessary to protect Earth. The Knightmare scene also makes everything so much clearer in BvsS as well.
Superman is back and we get the black suit, nod to Death of Superman ! Henry Cavill is back donning the all- black Kryptonian suit, black cape and silver S, which WB decided against for the theatrical release. Superman’s return makes so much more sense with the imminent threat of Darkseid, and the more understandable attempt of the team to bring him back from the dead. One of the biggest differences is Superman’s return in the fight against Steppenwolf. Instead of trying to “talk it out” and going on about “truth and justice” blah blah, Superman swoops in and saves Cyborg from Steppenwolf’s attack. Superman proves he is the Man of Steel when taking no damage from Steppenwolf’s ax. This version also fixed the infamous atrocious Clark stash. Lois Lane (Amy Adams) also makes a lot more sense in this film as she is grieving most of the film and it actually explains why she is at the monument at the opportune time to stop Superman from lasering the JL because she’s there to grieve daily.
Aside from a much more cohesive narrative tied together with stronger character development and interactions there are some other noteworthy stand- outs. We got some cool Easter eggs like the green lantern corp, Granny Goodness and Big Barda. Instead of post- credit scenes we also get about twenty minutes of an epilogue which gives viewers a glimpse into what would’ve been the sequels to the Snyder verse.
Although I think this was way too long it was cool to see what else Synder would’ve had in store for us. We take a trip back to Lex Luthor’s yacht where he meets Deathstroke (this would’ve been the solo Batman film). It was awesome to see more Deathstroke but this scene should’ve remained the same as the original post credit. There was also the post- Apokolips scene continued from BvsS with the Earth waste-land where we see a return of the Joker! Another awesome scene tying into future movies with a team up of Batman, Deathstroke, Mera Cyborg and the Flash. This scene also felt too drawn out and Joker felt a little forced, but it was still great to see Leto get his shot. Another awesome cameo was Martian Manhunter, but where the hell have you been? General Sanwick has been around since Man of Steel why choose to get involved now?
What didn’t work? (minor)
DC still relies too heavily on CGI, although there has been much improvement since the mustache catastrophe, the way DC shoots is very dark and can appear cheap. They could have lightened the 300 tone a bit. Marvel has a much more definitive style that looks more realistic, for some reason DC can’t get their CGI right. Yes, Steppenwolf looked better, and if you could get past Mera’s horrible accent her hair also looked so much better and natural.
Aside from the CGI, and being too lengthy, there was some wonky music. There was a much better score with Superman, The Flash and WW but Aquaman’s scenes were so cringy I almost fast forwarded. The lingering musical interludes and cringy lady smelling Aquaman’s clothes and people begging Arthur could have been cut. Cutting down the Aquaman scenes, some of the slow motion, the epilogue and some Lois could have brought us closer to 3 hours.
8.5 Fun, Action- packed, visually stunning, brilliant story-telling
The Snydercut left me with that good theater excitement when you walk out of a movie and want to watch it again. Most of us haven’t felt that since Endgame. Snyder gave fans magic, this was a huge win for fans of the DCU. Watching the Snydercut and the BvsS Extended cut will change your whole mindset. The Snyder cut not only restored the Justice League but it also makes BvsS a better movie. If the studios stopped interfering and let Snyder complete his vision Justice League would’ve been the DCU’s Goldmine comparable to Marvels’ Endgame.
**Personal complaints: ***For me two things that bother me with the Snyder verse are that he killed the wrong Robin. Snyder decided to kill Dick Grayson (Nightwing) instead of Jason Todd.
The other is that I can’t stand Jesse Eisenberg’s winy portrayal of Lex Luthor. Otherwise I love the Snyderverse and wish we could see more.
Wonder Woman 1984, one of the most anticipated films this year, just released this past Friday on HBO MAX and in limited theaters.

As Levius prepares for his fight with the current champion, his trainer Zack wonders if Levius could ever be prepared for a fight on this level. Meanwhile, Amethyst returns (from way back in volume one) with an unbeatable new fighter named Balthus; the brother of A.J. who claims she no longer remembers him.
I was wondering if and how Amethyst would make his return and manipulating A.J.’s brother after all she did to protect him was just the type of messed up thing I’d expect from Amethyst. This volume is a real page-turner with some interesting character development and again, the fighting is drawn incredibly well. I am super pumped for the final showdown with Amethyst! 5 out of 5.

Levius is advancing in the ranks, facing tougher opponents the likes of Natalia; bringing in the notion of these mechanized warriors so dedicated to their battles, they will even fight unconscious. But as Levius nears his dream, another fighter named Kingsley tempts Levius with information about the father who abandoned Levius and his comatose mother.
It’s awesome to read about the mindset of the fighters and what victory means to each of them as they put their lives on the line. And it’s cool to see so much time spent on the fights. They are well-drawn and detailed so your eyes don’t get lost so you can keep track of what’s happening. I’m looking forward to seeing Levius face down someone so powerful who also knew his father. 4.5 out of 5.

Kaoru Fukazawa has just finished his manga series and hit it big. With his fans and publisher begging for his next work, he finds himself unable to create anything. With no ideas and running out of time and money, Fukazawa quickly runs out of anyone who has faith in him, least of all himself.
This is an intensely depressing tale of a man who attained big success and feels that even if he lives up to it, he will still never feel like he loves his work. While well drawn, Fukazawa is not a likable main character. He's a miserable creature who I'm not even sure I want to succeed. You're not so much rooting for him as watching in morbid fascination as the conclusion nears. Not a fun read but an interesting story. 3.9 out of 5.

In this comic, the high school is divided into predators and prey and one student among them is selected to be a 'Beastar' - essentially their version of valedictorian as they exemplify the best of both predator and prey. But when a prey student is found dead, tensions are high and loner wolf, Legoshi - a friend of the murdered student - is struggling with his control with so much fear around him.
As I was reading this very sketchy drawn book, I didn't think I would like it. I was concerned it would be to "on the nose" with the predator/prey aspect only to find it more nuanced than I'd assumed. This is one of the more original manga outings I've read in a long time. While the art style may feel strange at first, the characters draw you in. An impressive first volume and I do hope to continue this series.
And yup, totally got the Bella Legosi reference.

Book-ended with the life of June Stein, this novel dives into Las Vegas in the 1950's and a casino called 'The Midnight Room.'
This book feels a lot like the times where I went into a real casino in Vegas and Atlantic City; glitz, glamour, sadness, and desperation. Including June, the lives of four very different women collide together over the course of a lifetime in this book and we follow some hauntingly poetic stories. I'm not really one for historical fiction and this book managed to suck me in and I had trouble putting the book down.
I do have to say some of the point of view changed had me confused but the story managed to sort itself out in a few paragraphs; particularly in the end when it's suddenly all from June's perspective but as it's her life that frames the entire narrative, it's forgivable. An excellent period piece and I recommend. 3.9 out of 5.

While Mila is out playing, she meets a strange but beautiful girl named Agnes who believes ghosts live in her teeth. As they spend more time together, Mila realizes Agnes is far from a normal girl as otherworldly forces spill into Mila's life.
This is what I was expecting from Likely Stories; a trippy, thrilling, scary, bloody, fantastic fantasy story that's beautiful to look at. The art takes some getting used to but if you can appreciate the likes of Roman Dirge or Dave McKean, this will be a treat to read through. If you like dark fantasy where fairy tale nightmares bleed into real life, this is a cool book to read and I'd like to see more from this creator. 4.7 out of 5.

After her mother's death, Marjorie is holding down the family laundromat all by herself and raising her little brother as her father is still mired in his grief. She has typical outsider problems at school but she also has to deal with the conniving Nigel; who is after the laundromat to demolish the building and replace it with a resort. Feeling disconnected and helpless, things change for Marjorie when a ghost named Wendell sneaks into her shop.
This is a beautiful story about a young woman dealing with loss the best way she can. The laundromat is a perfect setting after such a deep shock since, after the death of a loved one, you do feel like you're spinning and being tossed about beyond your control; feeling transparent and lost, just floating through life.
Not too much time is spent on the "mean girls" schtick, as that can get old real fast. The idea of ghosts being actual sheets could be stupid if not for the amazing art. The whole book is in such a soothing palate, it's a pleasure to the eyes. Wendell and his friends are delightful as well but if I had to nitpick (and of course I do) this is another of those awesome graphic novels that feels like it ended too soon. I wanted to know more about everyone; even that dipshit Nigel: He of the Punchable Face.
Also, and this is spoiler territory here, something about the ending didn't quite sit right with me. SPOILERSSS!!!
Marjorie starts using Ghosturizer - basically ghost detergent/stain remover - to save her failing business, which seems a bit exploitive to me. I get that do misadventures it was Wendell's fault in part that Marjorie got into some extra trouble but unfettered access to otherworldly cleaning products? Seems highly suspect.
Other than that, awesome book. It's meant for kids but I recommend to anyone who needs a daily dose of DAWWWW!! 4 out of 5.

After his aunt passes away, Percy Friedman moves into her home. Even though she left it to him, Percy is intent on selling it not only because it makes him miss his aunt so much, but it is also located in the same cul-de-sac as his childhood nemesis, Callagahan Glover. But, As Percy settles back into the tight-knit community and gets to know Callagahan all over again, he wonders if running away is the best plan.
I enjoyed this "enemies" to lovers story. There is no real malice between Percy and Cal so when their relationship forms, it feels real and relatable. Their sarcastic barbs are funny, the main leads are charming, and even the side characters have plenty of personality without derailing the main focus. It's a nearly perfect bit of fluff but since there's no closure regarding Percy's relative, Frank, I felt as if that bit was incomplete. Other than that, a great sweet and sexy romance. 3.9 out of 5.

If I were to sum this up, I would describe this as if the minds behind Black Mirror re-wrote the ending to Wreck it Ralph. The book has you thinking about the nature of what an AI really is and what they are forced to do at the hands of human users.
The characters may be just in-game characters, but they have all the personality and depth, I got sucked into the world right away. I had so much fun reading this and I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes original cyberpunk stories. The action starts right up and doesn't let up very often; making this book hard to put down. Beautifully written and tense, this was a great read. 4 out of 5.

Ress is cornered between two opposing factions while all he wants is a quiet life with his family. Arden is trapped by duty to the Shar-denn and the orders to hunt down Ress for betraying them yet Arden finds the growing feelings for Ress may outweigh the task.
Setting aside how fucking confusing the pronouns for a nonbinary/gender queer character (Arden) are without knowing them before you start this book and think they are typos, it is the characters that make this book. The writing makes them come alive but the rest? I sadly found it tiresome. Boring isn't quite the word because I made it through the book without my mind fogging and my eyes glazing over but if what made the impact is the new pronouns making me feel like an out of touch old geezer, then something is missing. Not bad, took a chance with a character like Arden which needs to happen more, but ultimately a 3.5.
